COMMUNITY PROGRESS SCHOLARSHIP COMMITEE
Background
The Community Progress Competition was instituted by the Canadian National Railways for communities of European origin. The first prize of $1,000 was won by the Municipal District of Norma in 1930. This money was invested with a long-range plan of being used for scholarships, which explains how this fund obtained its name.
The original objective of the fund was to provide scholarships to students attending agricultural schools. When this objective outlived its purpose the scholarship fund was diverted to recognizing students at the Vegreville Composite High School.
It was then the Board in charge of the Community Progress Scholarship (CPS) Fund decided to offer a scholarship to the graduating student who made the greatest progress during the year at the Vegreville Composite High School.
Community Progress Scholarship (CPS) Award Amount
The amount of the CPS award is determined by the Community Progress Scholarship (CPS) Board. Currently the award amount is $200. County of Minburn Council passed a resolution in October 2009 to contribute yearly to the CPS Fund by matching the $200 and award a cheque in that amount to the successful recipient.
